Their Eyes Were WAtching God Ch. 19

In the final chapters of the book Janie was put on trial for the murder of Tea Cake. Throughout the trial, she spoke very little, which is odd because she is usually quick to speak. But now, she is quiet because she lost someone that meant everything to her. Tea Cake was the first husband whom she really cared about and who really cared about her. And she was just recently forced to kill him. This was a very traumatic experience for her to go through as one could imagine. It is a tough thing to destroy something or someone that you truly care about. To add to that, Janie was being prosecuted for murder of the first degree only a few hours after it happened. So, of course she sat silently until it was needed for her to speak. What could she say? There was nothing for Janie to say until it was time for her to tell her story. Her grief during the trial and all of her 'friends' who were there to testify against her kept her quiet.

I agree with you on your statement that due to the passage of time, or lack thereof, Janie did not have the will to speak. She had just lost her true love, Tea Cake, and now she was supposed to tell her story and proclaim her innocence. Janie was overrun with grief, thus it was hard for her to speak.

Also, maybe Janie did not want to speak because she should not have to testify against her husband whom she loved with all of her heart. She believed that showing her immense amount of grief was enough to exhibit her love for Tea Cake, for there would have been no point to grieving if she didn't love someone. Hence, speaking more than necessary would have taken her solemn attitude away and gave her "friends" reason to say that she killed Tea Cake in cold blood.

I agree with your post. I believe that she is in a lot of grief as well because of her hard loss to Tea Cake whom she loved truly. Its not easy to kill somebody you love, especially when its the only love you'd had in your life. Great blog Thomas!
