Luke vs Beowulf

Luke Skywalker and Beowulf share many traits that make them heros, but also differ quite a bit. Luke becomes a hero at a fairly young age. He was still living with his aunt and uncle when he was called to action. Beowulf, as we read it, was already a great hero and everyone knew it just looking at him. He had already slew many foes, while Luke was fixing droids and farming. They are both heroic in manner. Luke ends up saving the day by initially saving Princess Leia and eventually destroying the Death Star. Beowulf defeated Grendel, his mom, and a dragon back in his homeland. Their reasons for being so heroic are different. Man-to-man combat and hunting monsters was how Beowulf grew up. It was his profession as Steve Jobbs's is to make software. Luke didn't grow up like Beowulf did. He worked with his aunt and uncle. Luke's first incentive to fight back was when his aunt and uncle were murdered. He fought for his family and for revenge. Later on, though, he fought for the Rebel Alliance. He wanted to save the oppressed and to do so he had to destroy the Death Star. Beowulf fought for himself, while Luke fought for others. Beowulf was very boastful of himself. On the other hand, Luke carried himself in a humble manner. He did not show the pride that Beowulf had.

Beowulf 2

Wiglaf’s character is very similar to Beowulf as one would assume since he is Beowulf’s go to man. He was the only person who stayed with Beowulf to the end. While the others fled, fearing the dragon’s might, Wiglaf stayed his ground, and defended his great leader. Wiglaf wounded the dragon allowing for Beowulf to finish it off. During this battle, Wiglaf showed courgae, bravery, and heroism just as his leader required of him. And even after the battle with the dragon, Wiglaf continued to show his heroism and honor by carrying out Beowulf funeral pyre requests. After Beowulf’s passing, I saw some values that were different than Beowulf. Beowulf was a great warrior who gave to his people. He was a brute. Wiglaf, a warrior too, began to show great wisdom after the great battle. He foresaw the future. Because of Beowulf’s death, he knew that other kingdoms would try to conquer the Geatland. Wiglaf assumed leader of the Geats and immediately began acting as a good king would.

Beowulf 1

Unferth responded in the way he did because he felt inferior to Beowulf. He was like a wolf trying to defend his alpha male status. Unferth is the local hero of the Danes, so naturally he would feel threatened by Beowulf- the great hero from the land Geats. He wanted to belittle Beowulf's greatness to make himself seem better. Unferth recalled Beowulf's race with Breca across the sea and how Beowulf lost. His intentions fail when Beowulf responds. Beowulf admits that Unferth's accusations were true. He then goes on about how his finish and journey was much greater than Breca's. Along the way, Beowulf had to stop multiple times to slaughter the sea monsters who wished to drag their bodies to bottom of the sea. Beowulf may have finished second but none would have been able to do what he did and still finish. This boast of his race with Breca glorified him even more as a hero. The fact that Beowulf was able to swim across the sea and fight monsters all in one piece was more heroic than actually winning. At first it was just a race, then race turned fowl and became a battle. In this battle, Beowulf rose as the victor.
