Linda in the North

Linda's experience in the North was very confusing to her. Being free made everything a normal person would do foreign to her. She had to learn the ways of being free and learn what it meant to be free. As anyone would have expected, her experience was much better than being a slave in the den in the South. But, being free did not take away the fact that she was black, and there were still racists in the North. Being free did not mean getting respect. She had hoped to live in a house with her children and possibly William. But that's not what happened. Linda reunited with Ellen, but Mrs. Hobbs didn't allow Ellen to live with Linda. Mrs. Hobbs told Linda that Ellen still belonged to her (Mrs. Hobbs).
